Après un début de carrière comme trompettiste du groupe de jazz/funk Seawind à la fin des années 70, Jerry Hey devient l’arrangeur le plus demandé de Los Angeles en dirigeant notamment les sections cuivres de Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Toto, Al Jarreau et David Foster. Né dans une famille de musiciens à Dixon, dans l'Illinois, en 1950, Jerry Hey n'est pas devenu musicien par hasard. Il commence la trompette très tôt et suit des études musicales à l'université de l'Indiana. C'est là qu'il rencontre Larry Williams et Kim Hutchcroft avec qui il part pour Hawaï. Sur place, ils rencontrent Ken Wild, Bob Wilson puis Pauline Wilson. Ils forment le groupe Ox qui prendra ensuite le nom de Seawind. En 1976, le groupe part pour Los Angeles afin d'enregistrer son premier album. Seawind enregistre trois autres albums avant de se séparer en 1979.Quincy Jones qui apprécie particulièrement la section cuivre de Seawind s'empresse de débaucher Jerry Hey pour ses propres disques et productions, faisant du musicien un trompettiste mais surtout un arrangeur très demandé. Jerry Hey travaille notamment pour Michael Jackson en participant aux enregistrements de tous les albums du King of Pop depuis Off the Wall.La liste des artistes avec qui il a travaillé est d'une longueur impressionnante et lui a déjà valu 7 Grammy Awards. On le retrouve sur des disques d'artistes aussi différents que Frank Sinatra, George Benson, Dolly Parton, Elton John, Whitney Houston ou Maroon 5. Il a aussi travaillé sur des musiques de films, recevant une nomination aux Oscars pour la bande-son de La Couleur pourpre.
